12 Hero WODs in 12 Hours

MidState’s 12 Hero WODs in 12 Hours

The premise of this event is simple.  One tribute workout an hour for 12 hours, ending with the most famous of them all, MURPH.  This long-haul challenge is simultaneously a test of mental toughness and human perseverance.  An ultimate tribute for those they are written for while showing our gratefulness for these 12 heroes and their sacrifices.

You can take the ultimate challenge and do all 12 workouts, or you can opt to do just a few of your choice, or even just pick one and done.

Our History With 12 Heroes

In 2021, we had the whole event planned.  We had signed everyone up that wanted to participate, T-shirts were printed, WODs were picked.  Coach Gabby wanted to take on the challenge and had rallied the troops to join her.  Sadly, on Saturday, February 6, Gabby’s dad died.  The event was cancelled.

Gabby’s father for many decades suffered from mental health issues, which included a bipolar diagnosis. He had a tribe around him that advocated for him day in and day out. After a very long year, John lost his battle with mental health and took his own life.

“I will always question the decision he made.  I will always ask why we were not enough for him.  I will always wonder why he couldn’t feel my love.  For three years, I have avoided many things that would remind me of him.  This event being one of them.  This year, I decided I needed to start facing some of these things.  One of them, was to simply talk about it.  Simply was not so simple.  It’s much easier to just pretend it never happened.  However, I realized that was not healing anything.  I joined a mindset course, in which my only focus was to figure out if my father’s death was hindering my future growth.  What I learned was that I don’t have to be a victim to this terrible tragedy, I can be a survivor. ” - Gabby

So yes, this event was initially and still is to honor our veterans.  However, for Coach Gabby, it’s now more than that.  It’s about knowing that we all have our internal battles.  We fight battles every day that no one knows about.  Mental illness is all around us.  And while we might not understand why things happen the way they do, we can still choose to be kind.  We can still choose to love.  We can hug those that need it. Sit and listen to the stories that need to be shared.  Here at MidState CrossFit, we want to support you and others who often suffer alone.  And maybe if we all just share our stories, we all won’t feel so alone in this strange world.
