Blog - Hunting Eggs

Coaching Is Like An Easter Egg Hunt

The tradition of an egg hunt got me thinking about what we do everyday in our box. While enjoying an easter egg hunt with our kids this past weekend the kids found the obvious ones, the eggs that were clear to see but like any good parent we made some of the eggs challenging to find. Everyday the coaches at MidState CrossFit are trying to cue members into better movement, happier experiences, and empowering behaviors. We do this with our words, our movements, and our touch. Just like we were trying to get our kids to find all the eggs in the yard.

Being the parent putting on an easter egg hunt is just like learning how to teach CrossFit. “Hey, kiddo look right there, can you see what I am seeing” felt just like, “hey athlete you're moving this way, can you move like this instead.” “See this, feel that?” “Let’s work toward this or change it up like that”. “Wow great job finding that hidden treasure” felt just like “ Wow, great job finding that additional energy and staying focused.”

All these words though generic are happening in every class for many, many individuals. Athletes are filling up their baskets everyday, with improved squats, or an unbroken run, or that first pull up ever. As time passes eggs get harder to find though, as we get better and learn more skills it is at this time the hunt slows down.

Insert a well trained and trusted coach. The coaches have to continue to drive for you to look harder for the eggs, and work harder to complete the movements that are just a little out of reach, if you could just see it yourself. Finding the words, or doing the demo, or touching in such a way that allows you to successfully find the mechanics to perform the exercise. Often coaches will use cues that help one athlete find their egg but another is just lost in the grass looking aimlessly up. We have to find new words, get creative, and have fun with them. It is a playful and exciting experience. Trusting the parent who tells you there is an egg somewhere close is just like trusting a coach who is working with you to find that magic cue that helps find the magic egg and perform something amazing. Our coaching staff is looking to guide you relentlessly until every last easter egg is found and your basket of eggs is filled for you to enjoy for a lifetime, though if we are doing this right, there will always be another egg to find.
